2.Placement of Adjectives and Adverbs in Sentences形容词和副词的位置

a.Sometimes it is difficult to decide whether to use an adjective or an adverb after a verb that pertains to one of the senses.If the verb expresses an action by the subject,use an adverb after it.

有时感官动词之后用形容词或副词较难判断。假如动词表述的是由主语发出的行为,通常用副词修饰。

The export drawback rate is reduced dramatically.

The goods will be dispatched immediately.

When the verb shows condition or state-of-being,use an adjective after it.

但当动词表明事物所处状态时,则用形容词。

The market for silk cloth seems great.

Your ideas of the new design sound good to me.

Those fashionable modes look expensive.

b.Some adverbs have two acceptable forms.The form ending in-ly is more formal,and it is more appropriate for business communication.

有些副词有两种形式。通常以-ly结尾的那种较为正式,较适合在商务英语写作中运用。

slow quick cheap direct fair loud

slowly quickly cheaply directly fairly loudly

Many communities post signs warning motorist s to go slow in school zones.

We must proceed slowly in marking such changes as the one Miss Sachs suggested.

c.The placement of only,also,or too often affects the meaning of a sentence.Therefore,be careful when using these words.Note the different meanings of the following sentences.

有些副词only,also和too等在句中位置不同将极大地影响到句子的意思,因此在使用时要非常小心。请注意下列句子的不同意义。

I sent my application form to them only yesterday.

Only I sent my application form to them yesterday.

I only sent my application form to them yesterday.

I sent my application form only to them yesterday.

I also called Mr.Jeffreys,the vice President.

Also,I called Mr.Jeffreys,the vice President.

I called Mr.Jeffreys,the vice President,also.
