Self Fulfilling Prophecy
By Darren Trottman
At the age of nine, I began my training in martial arts with a Judo class. Following tough years as a teenager, I found myself going to the gym where I trained with weights, as I believed that the larger I could grow my muscles, the more fearless I would become in life.
When I was 19 years old, I increased my weight training to take me to the level of a professional natural body builder. Yet I realized that the giant body I had created was not providing the answers I needed.
At 21 years old, I began training at one of the many kickboxing clubs that proliferated at the time. Finally, in 1996, I discovered Tiger Crane style Kungfu. Training in both Tiger Crane and kickboxing took over my life.
I continued training in both Kungfu and kickboxing for a while, until I decided that the kickboxing was holding back my ability to move forward in Kungfu. Kickboxing just made me angry; Kungfu still energized me, but it taught me to control my anger and aggression as it is all-enveloping in its teachings.
Kungfu is not just about kicking and punching, but encompasses everything about the fight and beyond, both mentally and physically. In all its aspects, kungfu is complex yet at the same time, simple. It is a lifelong journey and is not something that can be mastered in a few years.
When I first started training in kungfu, I just wanted to fight all the time. This is when kungfu got to grips with me; I have always said that you do kungfu, then kungfu becomes you. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy.

A.Dialogues
Please read the following dialogues and note the italic expressions.
Dialogue 1 Tai Chi Class
A: Hi, your clothes look very special and they must be very comfortable.
B: Yes, I will practice Tai Chi at 6 o’clock tomorrow morning.
A: Wow, Tai Chi, Chinese martial arts!
B: Yes, we have a Tai Chi Club in our school and we practice every morning. You can come and join us if you are interested in it. It’s for free.
A: Sure, of course. I’ve been longing to learn Chinese Kung Fu since I was a kid. I can’t wait to learn. Can you explain something about it now?
B: No problem. The first thing you should remember is that Tai Chi is not for attacking and fighting, but for protecting and defending.
A: Sounds interesting.
A: Yes. The main purpose of Tai Chi is to build our body and balance our strength.
B: I see, so what do I need to pay attention to first?
A: Concentration. You need to calm down and focus on your body movements. Your eyes should follow the motions of your hands.
B: Ok, I heard people say that my body must move slowly.
A: That’s right, as slowly as possible. And you should try to complete each movement fully.
B: How about my breathing? Should I breathe slowly, too?
A: Mostly. Breathing is a very important part in Tai Chi. That’s also one reason why we practice in the morning, for the air is fresh at that time.
B: That must be very difficult.
A: Actually it is very natural. When you begin to practice, your breathing naturally coordinates with your movement.
B: That’s great. I will come with you tomorrow morning to practice it.
Dialogue 2 Chinese Kung Fu and Bruce Lee
A: The movie Kung Fu Panda triggers people’s interest in Chinese martial arts. More and more foreigners try to learn Chinese Kung Fu.
B: Yes. Actually Kung Fu is a Chinese expression and now is used internationally. That can be considered as a Chinese factor in the global affairs.
A: So what’s the origin of Kung Fu?
B: In Chinese, Gōngfu is a compound of two words, combining gōng meaning “achievement”or “merit”, and fū which translates into “man”, so literally it means “human achievement”.
A: Really, that’s interesting. It’s my first time to hear that.
B: Yes. It refers to excellence achieved through long practice in any endeavor. You can say that a person’s kung fu is good in cooking, or that someone has kung fu in calligraphy; saying that a person possesses kung fu in an area implies skill in that area, which they have worked hard to develop.
B: I see. It has so many meanings.
A: The term was uncommon until the late 1960s, when it became popular due to Hong Kong films, Bruce Lee, and later the television series Kung Fu. Before that, Chinese martial arts was primarily referred to in the West as “Chinese boxing”, rather than “kung fu”.
B: Bruce Lee! I know him. He is very well known in western countries. He is widely considered to be the most influential martial artist of modern times.
A: He is more than a martial artist. He is also a philosopher, film director, film producer, screenwriter, and founder of the Jeet Kune Do martial arts movement.
B: Wow, he is so great!
A: One day someone asked him “What are your thoughts when facing an opponent?” Can you guess his answer?
B: What was it?
A: He answered, “There is no opponent.”
B: Wow, he was so confident and powerful.
A: Actually this is not his true meaning. Bruce Lee’s explaining is that “Because the word ‘I’does not exist”.
B: What a wonderful answer. No wonder he was the master of Kung Fu.

Non -verbal Skill

Getting Attention in a Positive Way
Positive attention and approval are among the strongest rewards for people. Unfortunately, people seldom use attention wisely. There are three kinds of attention: positive attention, negative attention and no attention. Positive attention can be words of praise or encouragement, closeness, hugs, or a pat on the back. A pleasant note works well. Positive attention increases good behavior.
There are things that you want in your relationship that you aren’t getting. Maybe you want your partner to be more open with you about things. Whatever it is, you’ve identified something that you need or want from your partner. How can you get it without ruining your relationship? Positive reinforcement works wonders with people of all ages. If you get what you need from your partner, recognize that and reward it with praise. Thank your friend when he stops at the grocery store so you don’t have to. Let your girlfriend know that you really loved it when she said hi and gave you a hug as soon as you walked in the door. The more you recognize the things that you do get, the more you’re going to get them.
? Ask for what you want explicitly. If you’re not getting what you want at all or the positive reinforcement isn’t working, then you might just need to be more explicit with your partner. Don’t be demanding; let your partner know that he has a lot of great qualities but that there’s something else that you want in order to be even happier in your relationship.
? Make a logical argument for why you should get what you want. You may find that your partner isn’t giving you what you want because he doesn’t see the point in it. If you can make a clear argument for why you should get what you want, then your partner may come over to your side.
? Make it fun. Relationships that really last are relationships where things remain fun. You want a partner that you can laugh with. You want a partner that you can enjoy spending time with. If you want something, make it fun for both of you.
? Recognize what you already get. If you still can’t manage to get what you specifically want from your partner and you still think that it’s a relationship worth being in then you should focus on everything that you get from it. Instead of wanting what you can’t have, learn to want what you already do have. This is a great positive way to approach life. A gratitude journal is a great way to recognize what you already do get from your partner. Celebrate it!
Practice:
Please prepare a short speech about one of the following topics, and pay attention to get the positive attention from your partner.
1) The day of graduation
2) The moment I’m waiting for
3) The present I’m longing for
4) My first day in university
Verbal Skill
Expressing in a Positive Way

Learn the following conversations and make conversations with your partners based on the situations given below.
1) A: Do you have the confidence to take on the position of wedding coordinator?
B: Absolutely. Well I know I want to be a wedding planner because I’m at my happiest and most confident when I’m organizing.
A: How many years’ experience did you say you had on television?
B: Two.
A: Only two? I’m not convinced that the experience you’ve had is diverse enough to take on this position.
B: I have been very multi-skilled in those jobs, those roles.
A: How?
B: I was office manager, receptionist. I helped with marketing, I helped with sales, Ihelped with live events.
A: Right. Stop there. So all those particular jobs, you were being directed. Tell me please where you have stood on your own two feet and you’ve handled difficult problems on your own without aid.
B: OK. My manager felt confidence enough to hand over to me a particular client. I produced a small video that satisfied everyone, including that picky bride.
A: Fine. We’re going to give you one more opportunity to impress us. Now we’re gonna see how badly you want the job.
B: I like the building up to a perfect day, to make somebody’s one day the best day of their life memorable. I like romance, I like the excitement and creativity that I can put into it.
A: Great! You’ve got the job.
2) A: What’s this for?
B: Just because...
A: Some of your friends will get married soon? Or someone is going to have a birthday. No, I remember no one in the family is going to celebrate a birthday this month.
B: Dear, if possible, where would you choose to spend this weekend?
A: This weekend? Of course, at home. There’s no place like home, you know. And I really want to stay with the children. I need to spend more time with them. And home is such a sweet place after a tiring business trip.
B: Look at the doll, do you remember where did we get it?
A: Paris, so what? How are the children?
B: They have gone out to play with grandma. Do you remember you gave the doll a name and said…
A: “I wish my first baby were a girl.”… Oh, my god! This weekend is our ten year wedding anniversary! How can I forget it?
B: So this is for you, my dear wife. Wear it and we are going to spend a second
honeymoon in Paris.
A: But how about the children? Will they go with us?
B: No, only you and me.
A: But…
B: Come on. The grandma will bring them to the countryside to visit their uncles and Ireally want to see your smile under the golden sunshine of Paris. You looked so beautiful and charming. I’ve arranged everything. We deserve it.
A: Darling, you are so sweet. How can I refuse such a loving heart?

Sonnets to Morpheus[“I know kung fu”]
By John Beer
“I know kung fu.” It won’t bring back the world.
5:15 a.m.: I wake from another dream,
the same as every dream. A man builds a ship
in my chest. Each of the sailors
carries by her breast a picture of her sister.
The ship is not the image of a ship.
Beyond its sails there are no stars.
The water is only water because it’s black.
5:15 a.m. Perhaps you’ve seen me
practicing my moves in the empty prison yard
and wondered whether you were the dreamer
conjuring me into existence from the bare
desire to caress a phantom ship
and my death the death of your desire.
