J: Yes. I’ve heard a little about the report, too. Would you tell me more about it?
H: About thirty thousand people between the ages of 40 to 69 took part in the study. They were from the northern central part of China.

H: Because people there have an extremely high rate of cancer of the stomach and esophagus.
J: How was the study conducted?
H: Researchers divided the people into eight groups. Seven of the groups received different mixtures of vitamins and minerals daily for five years.

Having a Respectful Attitude
Whether a parent, child, or grandparent—we all need to work and live together in our community. It had been said that “manners are the oil that lubricates society”—everything just works smoother when we have good manners! Families are the foundation of our society. Strong families make strong communities.
Let’s commit to choose respectful attitudes, words and actions that build up family and our community—not tear them down. Together, we can make a difference!
As Mom and Dad, we respect each other and as parents we respect our children.
As children, because we know our parents love us and want the best for us, we will honor and respect them with our attitudes, words and actions.
We will choose to have a good attitude—a respectful attitude. Our respectful attitude will help us use respectful words. We use “The Five Fabulous Phrases” that can change the world.
“Please,”
“Thank you!”
“You are welcome,”
“Excuse me” and
“I’m sorry, will you forgive me?”
When we talk to each other, we show respect by looking into their eyes and being a good listener. When we meet new people we remember “The Five Steps of Awesome Introductions”:
1. Look directly into their eyes.
2. Smile and be friendly.
3. Shake hands firmly—not like a dead fish!
4. Say “Hi! Nice to meet you!”
5. Introduce yourself and have good conversation.

Food Pyramid
The following picture is called “food pyramid”, which is quantitative nutrition guideline, using a mnemonic graphic of a pyramid with hierarchical separated zones to represent suggested percentages of the daily diet for different food groups. Since 1992, the first well known pyramid by the United States Department of Agriculture, several other countries and organizations published nutrition suggestions in pyramidal representation as well.
Discuss with your neighbor about the proportion of Carbohydrate group, vegetable group, fruit group, fat group, dairy group and protein group in your daily diet.

2. Read the following passage. Do you agree with all the ideas in the essay? Explain you own ideas.
Keeping Your Tank Full
Keeping your tank full is very important so you don’t end up being unable to focus and not being able to keep your eyes open. Sometimes it may be you are not getting enough sleep but, it probably is because of what you are eating.
Here are some tips to make you keep your energy constant through the day.
Don’t go hungry. It’s difficult to do anything if you haven’t eaten enough or at all, so to keep our blood sugar from dropping, you need to eat small meals during the day. It is recommended to have three normal sized meals plus two snacks per day. Choose things that are whole-grain like oatmeal with fruit.
Don’t go thirsty. If you don’t have enough to drink you can get light-headed, dizzy, headachy and a little confused. An increased heart rate and breathing rate are common, too. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day to prevent this from happening to you.
Save your sport drinks. Plain water does the trick for hydration but if you easily tire out when you exercise, a sports drink will be for you. Sports drinks have glucose, a sugar your body uses for energy, and electrolytes, something you lose when you sweat.
Pick the best protein. Protein doesn’t give you a big burst of energy that would get from fruits or bread, but it will give you the power for your levels to be even. Some good sources of protein include chicken, fish, lean meat, low-fat dairy, buts and nut butters.
Include supplements to your daily routine. A lot of energy comes from making sure you are eating the right things. To make sure everything is covered taking a multivitamin can be your extra insurance.
Limit the fat you eat. If you are eating fat for energy it doesn’t really need to be there. Usually it just ends up making you feel sluggish. Fat slows digestion. Make sure you are getting all your vegetables and fruits in during the day. It will be a great pick me up!
