此书原系英国作家所著，始于一八六六年，一八九七年作家去世，原作中辍，止于贝多芬一八一六年的阶段。后由德人Hermann Deiters译成德文，并续著；一九○七年D氏去世，书又中辍。MH.Riemann于一九一七年续成，全书五大册，为研究贝多芬最完备详尽之作。
