[00:23.57]SECTION A CONVERSATIONS
[00:28.40]In this section you will hear several conversations.
[00:33.54]Listen to the conversations carefully
[00:36.79]and then answer the questions that follow.
[00:40.29]Questions 1 to 3 are based on the following conversation.
[00:46.25]At the end of the conversation, you will be given 15 seconds
[00:51.29]to answer the questions.
[00:53.57]Now, listen to the conversation.
[00:57.97]M: Well, Mary, now that we've seen the three apartments,
[01:01.92]which one do you like best?
[01:04.67]W: I don't know, John.
[01:06.82]I know one thing.
[01:08.19]I don't like the one on the 68th Street.
[01:12.14]M: Neither did I.
[01:13.95]Let's cross that one off.
[01:16.16]That leaves the 72nd Street one and the 80th Street one.
[01:21.02]W: The one on the 80th Street has a better view,
[01:24.53]and a very cheerful kitchen.
[01:26.86]M: Yes, and it was clean.
[01:29.08]But there was no good place to put a desk.
[01:31.91]W: That's true.
[01:33.69]You could always just put it in a corner of the living room,
[01:37.03]but then you wouldn't have any privacy.
[01:39.78]M: Right. And I do need to be able
[01:42.32]to leave my work on the desk.
[01:44.62]W: Oh, John, what about the 72nd Street apartment?
[01:48.87]It has a dining area.
[01:50.77]We could eat in the kitchen,
[01:52.62]and put the desk in the dining area.
[01:55.03]It's more private there.
[01:56.99]M: Yes, that sounds OK.
[01:59.85]Only, what I didn't like about that place
[02:02.51]was the west window.
[02:04.75]It gets quite hot in the late afternoon
[02:07.45]with the sun beating down on the window.
[02:10.48]W: Didn't you notice the air conditioner?
[02:12.78]M: No. Was there one?
[02:15.20]W: Yes. And we could improve on the curtains, too.
[02:19.24]M: That place did have the best parking facilities of the three.
[02:23.48]W: Yes, it's best for our needs.

[02:41.20]Questions 4 to 6 are based on the following conversation.
[02:46.46]At the end of the conversation, you will be given 15 seconds
[02:50.91]to answer the questions.
[02:52.97]Now, listen to the conversation.

[02:57.20]M: Good morning, Miss Liu.
[02:59.75]It says here that you graduated from
[03:01.54]Beijing Normal University
[03:04.01]with a major in English Language and Literature.
[03:07.15]W: Right. Then you may think that I am not fit for this job
[03:11.63]according to my educational background.
[03:14.54]M: Yes. But why do you apply for this position?
[03:18.63]W: I want to be a tour guide very much
[03:21.84]because I like traveling and meeting various kinds of people.
[03:26.19]So I took an evening course at the Tourism School of Beijing
[03:30.49]after graduation and I have gotten a qualification certificate.
[03:35.39]M: So you must be an extravert?
[03:37.93]W: Yes, I always enjoy being with a group of people
[03:41.65]and chatting with them.
[03:43.55]M: What do you think are the responsibilities of a tourist guide?
[03:47.84]W: A tourist guide must be responsible for arranging
[03:51.69]and coordinating tour activities, and offering service
[03:55.33]of transportation, accommodation,
[03:58.04]sightseeing, shopping and entertainment.
[04:01.00]M: Don't you consider it a hard job?
[04:03.82]W: Hard but interesting, I think.
[04:06.37]M: Have you ever had any actual experience as a tourist guide?
[04:11.09]W: Yes, I usually guided foreign tourists
[04:14.74]around Beijing when I was in University.
[04:17.80]M: Have you ever learned any other foreign languages except English?
[04:22.34]W: Yes, I have learned a little French and Japanese as well.
[04:26.88]M: OK. I've asked all the questions.
[04:30.44]Do you have any questions?
[04:32.61]W: No, thank you.

[04:49.23]Questions 7 to 10 are based on the following conversation.
[04:54.51]At the end of the conversation, you will be given 20 seconds
[04:58.81]to answer the questions.
[05:01.01]Now, listen to the conversation.
[05:04.79]M: I see you and your friends have been decorating the dormitory.
[05:09.06]W: The walls looked so dull; we decided to cover them
[05:12.96]with prints and posters.
[05:15.34]M: I like this one. Did you buy it on campus?
[05:18.78]W: No, I bought it at the museum of modern art in New York City.
[05:23.43]The art history department recently
[05:26.32]sponsored a special museum tour there.
[05:29.37]M: Is this a reproduction of something
[05:32.51]in the museum's collection?
[05:34.65]W: Yes, it's a print of a painting
[05:37.69]by Georgia O'keffe called Lake George Window.
[05:42.06]M: It looks more like a photograph.
[05:44.86]The details are accurate and realistic.
[05:48.49]W: I thought the same thing
[05:50.54]when I first saw the painting hanging in the museum.
[05:53.75]But the art history teacher pointed out
[05:56.02]how the painting is stylized.
[05:58.91]M: What do you mean?
[06:00.76]W: By choosing a front view of the window,
[06:03.82]O'keffe was able to present a symmetrical image.
[06:07.36]M: It does look almost flat.
[06:10.06]The open shutters seem to have no depth at all.
[06:13.51]W: So even though she created a realistic painting of a window,
[06:18.67]O'keffe stylized and simplified the shapes
[06:22.11]to resemble an abstract design.
[06:24.96]M: It sounds as though you learned a lot on that trip.
[06:27.86]Is the art history department planning another museum tour?
[06:32.20]W: Yes, the next one is to a special exhibit of European painters
[06:36.99]at the museum of fine arts in Boston next week.
[06:40.70]M: I think I will sign up for that one.

[07:03.12]SECTION B  PASSAGES
[07:06.78]In this section, you will hear several passages.
[07:10.58]Listen to the passages carefully
[07:13.42]and then answer the questions that follow.
[07:16.66]Questions 11 to 13 are based on the following passage.
[07:22.49]At the end of the passage,
[07:24.25]you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions.
[07:28.95]Now, listen to the passage.
[07:33.49]Good morning, everybody,
[07:36.03]and welcome to Royal Hospital College.
[07:39.28]What a beautiful September you've brought with you.
[07:42.62]My name is Richard Thomas.
[07:45.72]I am the head of the chemistry department
[07:48.37]and today it's my pleasure
[07:50.59]to introduce our wonderful college to you.
[07:54.11]Regrettably, the Dean,
[07:56.56]Professor John Thomas has a bad case of flu,
[08:00.34]so he's staying in bed. He sends his apologies,
[08:04.48]but you'll be meeting him soon.
[08:07.24]Actually, the Royal Hospital College
[08:10.44]was not a college in the beginning.
[08:12.94]It was a hospital for retired sailors of the Royal Navy.
[08:17.38]And it wasn't here,
[08:19.27]in the beautiful countryside of east England.
[08:22.26]It was located in what it is now east London,
[08:25.95]on the banks of river Thames.
[08:28.85]Back in those days, it was also in the countryside,
[08:32.84]but London grew and grew, and by the end of the 19th century
[08:37.78]it was surrounded by houses and smoky factories.
[08:42.31]After the Second World War,
[08:44.86]a New Zealand millionaire named Sir Gifford Reade
[08:48.64]kindly gave our college 65 million pounds to move here.
[08:53.30]He was an architect,
[08:55.43]and he designed much of the beautiful school you see today.
[08:59.43]It opened in 1933.
[09:02.68]And if you look to your right,
[09:04.96]there is a statue of Sir Gifford Reade,
[09:08.07]facing that large statue of Queen Victoria.

[09:26.63]Questions 14 to 16 are based on the following passage.
[09:32.28]At the end of the passage,
[09:34.22]you will be given 15 seconds to answer the questions.
[09:38.76]Now, listen to the passage.

[09:43.85]Good evening, everyone.
[09:45.83]Welcome to the class of our sales and marketing course.
[09:50.36]Tonight, I'll be talking about advertising.
[09:54.60]Different types of advertising can make your company
[09:58.20]or your organization more successful.
[10:02.24]Now, I'm not going to talk about the advertising media.
[10:07.47]There are various choices—radio,
[10:10.46]newspapers, magazines and of course, the Internet.
[10:15.35]It's almost impossible to go into Google or Yahoo or whatever
[10:20.53]and not find advertising on almost every page.
[10:25.03]But, I'll stress one thing. Advertising can be expensive,
[10:31.27]whether you are a small businessman or a multinational corporation.
[10:36.38]So it's very important that what you spent on advertising
[10:41.76]is money well spent and that achieves your objectives.
[10:46.10]The ads must be "cost-effective".
[10:49.95]It is therefore essential to use the right "type" of advertising
[10:54.79]that makes it effective.
[10:56.84]There are several types of advertising,
[11:00.32]aiming to promote one or more,
[11:02.97]of the following things: brand name; company image;
[11:07.56]a product; a service or a group,
[11:10.85]like a manufactures' association.
[11:13.68]But the common aim is that the advertiser wants to change
[11:18.35]or reinforce people's attitudes or perception.
[11:22.39]For example, advertising to promote a brand name
[11:27.11]is designed to create and keep strong images
[11:31.42]in the customer's mind of the product, not the company.
[11:35.70]But different types of advertising might be mutually exclusive.
[11:41.28]The important thing is that the objectives must be clear,
[11:46.62]mutually supportive, not contradictory.
[11:50.31]Our time is up and we will continue next time.
[11:54.80]Good night!

[12:10.89]Questions 17 to 20 are based on the following passage.
[12:17.76]At the end of the passage,
[12:20.15]you will be given 20 seconds to answer the questions.
[12:24.43]Now, listen to the passage.
[12:27.99]Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
[12:31.97]First, I'm much honored to be here to give a speech.
[12:36.52]Nowadays, the rate of deforestation worldwide is astounding.
[12:42.15]It means the loss of habitat for numerous species of plants and animals.
[12:48.04]It is a major factor in the warnings from the scientists worldwide that,
[12:53.38]if mankind does not change how we treat our planet,
[12:58.07]50 percent of species could be extinct by the middle of this century.
[13:03.61]Then it would seriously threaten our social stability.
[13:07.92]The important ecological function of forests
[13:12.05]is their role in hydrologic cycle.
[13:15.49]When it rains,
[13:16.90]some of the water moves through the soil to streams and rivers.
[13:21.49]The rest evaporates into the air,
[13:24.03]providing moisture for clouds.
[13:26.67]If you break the cycle,
[13:28.71]people will have less rain for agriculture and other uses,
[13:33.00]and will face a great risk of floods.
[13:36.66]This effect is now seen very clearly in the Amazon,
[13:40.69]central Africa and elsewhere.
[13:43.73]We must not forget the millions of people
[13:46.62]depending on the healthy forests for their living.
[13:49.90]Besides, the forest environment provides us
[13:53.26]with wonderful opportunities for ecotourism
[13:57.00]—hiking, camping, bird watching and other outdoor activities.
[14:02.93]Therefore, it tells us that we should live in harmony with the forests
[14:08.25]and adhere to the strategy of sustainable development.
[14:12.95]That's all. Thank you.

[17:25.45]into the October story
[17:27.66]on the attack on a U.S.diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya.
[17:33.37]Internal review of the coverage is critical of
[17:36.22]network's handling of the October story on the raid.
[17:40.37]Show during its coverage of the story relied on
[17:43.50]an interview with the security contractor,
