Exhibition Room Two

These tablets and epitaphs on display were unearthed in the last 50 years. They are not only valuable textual materials for further research of the writing systems of the Tang Period, but also eulogized their virtues and achievements. These records were closely related to the significant events at the time:political, economic and military affairs.

In order to understand the intactness of the system of the stone carvings in front of the satellite tombs in Zhaoling, the Zhaoling Museum intentionally retains Li Ji's tombstone and the stone carvings around it.Li Ji's tombstone,5.56 meters in height and 15 tons in weight(not including the tortoise pedestal),stands in the center of the museum.

More exciting is that in recent years,do-zens of satellite tombs have been excavated one after another around the Zhaoling Mausoleum.Although some of them were robbed many years ago,a large number of works of art were still unearthed, including murals, tomb guardians, gold and silver wares, bronze mirrors, and pottery figures.

Among the unearthed works of art, pottery figures are the largest in quantity. These were the earliest of Tang figures. They look life-like with a variety of postures and are brightly and sprightly col ored. The method of manufacturing these painted and glazed pottery figures is very special. To make them, the first step is to form the molds out of porcelain clay. After the molds of the desired shapes are fired and glazed, they need to be fired with beautiful shapes and various postures again until they turn into glazed figures.

The glazed pottery figures with beautiful shapes and various postures unearthed in Zhao-ling look happy and gay.The different kinds of hair styles, dresses and adornments reflect the material civilization and the rich and colorful cultural life at that time. For instance, male pottery figures on horsebacks are wearing bowler hats. There are also pottery figures with heavy beards, big noses, and sunken eyes.Obviously, they are images of ethnic minorities on the western frontier. The camels are carrying water calabashes, pheasants and hares. It depicts the scene of merchants trudging over a long distance on the Silk Road. The painted and glazed pottery figures were fashionable only in the early Tang Dynasty and are peculiar to this period as well. They offer valuable information for the study of the culture and art of this period.

A Challenging Hunt

“。”

A woman answered her front door and found two boys holding a list.“Lady,”one of them explained,“we are on a treasure hunt, and we need three grains of wheat,apork-chop bone and a piece of used carbon paper to earn a dollar.”

“Wow,”the woman replied,“who sent you on such a challenging hunt?”

“Our baby-sitter's boyfriend.”
