The Wuzi Tablet

Located to the east of the Zhuque Gate, the Wuzi Tablet is 6.3 meters high, and weighs 98.8 tons. The sides of the tablet were carved with figures of dragon. The top part of the tablet was carved with eight oysters intersecting each other. Why was the Wuzi Tablet set up for Empress Wu Zetian? Some say that she want-ed people of later generations to give her a just and fair appraisal. Others say she thought that her merits and virtues were so immeasurable that they were beyond words.Still some others think that it was probably set up by Emperor Zhongzong, who was dissatisfied with her arbitrary decisions and peremptory actions and unwilling to flatter her.But as her son,it was inappropriate for him to reproach her.So he set up the Wuzi Tablet to let people of later generations judge her.Anyway, such a tablet has not been found before any other imperial mauso-leum in China. There are many characters carved in the tablet which were completed by people after the Song and Jin dynasties.
