在碑林回转的6条长廊上陈列着由魏至清的各代墓志。魏晋时严禁厚葬和立碑，但死者的亲属为了纪念死者，便将褒扬死者的言辞刻在石上，悄悄放入墓内。这种石刻后来就演变成墓志，墓志上的铭文称为墓志铭。
