The Shanghai Pacific Hotel stands on Nanjing Road, the “No.1 Road in China”. The hotel previously belonged to Hua'an Hequn Life Insurance Co. Ltd., and was known briefly as the Hua'an Building. Construction of the building commenced on August 1st, 1924. It was designed by an American named Eliot Hazzard and built by Jiang Yu Ji Construction Company. The building was completed in May 1926.

Built at a cost of 700,000 Liang Silver Yuan, the building covered an area of 2.96 acres (around 1973 square meters) and was 38.7 meters high with eight floors. The L-shaped building is in typical Renaissance style, reminiscent of an Italian Palazzo. Wherever you are in the building, you can feel the rich artistic essence of the Apennines, thousands of miles away.

On December 3rd, 1940, the Pacific Hotel was opened in this building and soon attracted wealthy businessmen and celebrities of all kinds. Throughout the year, guestrooms of the hotel were fully occupied. The restaurants, bars and ballrooms were also very well patronized.

In April 1950, the hotel became the office building of the East China Textile Industry Bureau. Later, the building was taken over by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government Supply Bureau. Because of accommodation requirements, the building once again became a hotel. The Overseas Chinese Hotel was open officially here on December 28th, 1958, and immediately became one of the prime hotels to accommodate overseas Chinese guests or guests from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. These guests came to Shanghai to visit their friends or relatives, or for traveling and sightseeing. The hotel has been endeavored to link overseas Chinese with their motherland, or to strengthen communication from both sides of the Strait. The hotel therefore enjoys high reputation in China and around the world.

After the reform and opening up of China in 1979, all kind of commerce and trade have been quickly developed. In order to meet the needs of the developing tourism industry as well as that of the guests, the Overseas Chinese Hotel made a commitment in 1985 to invest in a complete refurbishment of the hotel. To extend the type of guests it attracts, the hotel resumed the name of the Pacific Hotel Shanghai in 1992 and regained its former splendor.

Entering the 21st century, the hotel has modenized interior facilities following the refurbishment, while still retaining the original outer shape of the building. The hotel now has 182 guest rooms with complete facilities, including standard rooms, superior rooms, superior tourist rooms, and luxurious suites. The hotel also has Chinese and Western style restaurants, bars, multi-functional restaurants and VIP rooms of different sizes. The Pacific Hotel goes to great lengths to provide the best accommodation to the satisfaction of all its guests.
