Shanghai Club 上海总汇

(A National Architectural Heritage)

The building was completed in 1910. At that time, the multi-story buildings at the Bund were all of brick-and-wood structure. However, Shanghai Club adopted the steel-and-concrete structure. The six-story building reaches 30 meters in height. It was very eye-catching at the Bund in those years.

The external appearance of the building is of a typical British classic style. Between the third story and the fourth story, columns of Ionic Order are erected, at the north and south end of the fifth story there are turrets, and the decorations of the walls are of the Baroque style. The internal decorations of the building were designed by Japanese architects, following the decorative style of the Imperial Hotel of Japan. Therefore, people referred to this building as Japanese London. However, some part of the decoration has the English King James I style, so the house got the name Royal Club. The bar counter is 100 meters long, probably the longest even today. The triangular elevator in the building was made by the Siemens Company and looks still quite unique.

Shanghai Club was closed down during the period of the Pacific War, and occupied by the Japanese invaders. After 1949, it was used as the International Seamen's Club. And in 1971, it was transformed into Dongfeng Restaurant.
