Shanghai General Motor (GM) Co., Ltd., reputed as modern automobile manufacturing kingdom, is located in the export-processing zone of Jinqiao, Pudong, with an area of 0.55 million km² and a floor space of 0.23 million km². It is a large joint venture for automobile manufacturing by Shanghai Automobile Industry (Group) Corporation and General Motors Corporation of the United States with a total investment of US$1.52 billion. Founded on June 12, 1997, it is the largest Sino-American joint venture in China.

The rows of flat-roofed white workshops are neatly aligned within the compound. With no chimneys, no masses of dust veiling the sun, no rumbling noise, it is a garden factory with green trees, lawns and tranquility.

At present, Shanghai GM has produced 14 models in three series, such as Buick G18, Buick Regal, Buick Sail, etc. And so far the production capacity is 100000 cars, 100000 automatic gearboxes, and 180000 engines in two shifts annually. At the same time, the first flexible assembly line was set up here, for the whole-car manufacturing, including pressing, body, painting, assembling, and the process of manufacturing engines and gearboxes, which ranks top in the world. And the company has a complete set of purchase, logistics, manufacture, sales, and an after-sale service system as well as a quality management system. Therefore, it has passed the assessment by Shanghai quality system and acquired ISO1400. It is the first automobile manufacturing company that has acquired QS9000 in China.

While visiting Shanghai GM, tourists will first watch a 20-minute video, which introduces the historical development of the company and its future perspectives, enabling them to get some brief information. The tour will then start from the exhibition hall, which has displayed a variety of models by GM. Of all the models, the second one is quite interesting, which is a Grandfather Buick that GM manufactured in 1913. It is a gift that China Automobile Industry (Group) Co. Ltd bought in the United States for Shanghai GM. This is a very rare model. The white Buick right by the old Buick is full of signatures on the body. It was the first car manufactured after the founding of the company. The two cars juxtaposed here imply the historical transition to the current Shanghai Buick, and from the United States to Shanghai.

To visit all the workshops, tourists should walk along the overpass corridor that goes through the whole factory. The first visiting spot is the press workshop, which contains the first production stage of car manufacturing. This workshop covers an area of 22,000 m². In this workshop, tourists can witness the whole process of turning the rolls of steel sheets into the shells of cars.

The body workshop covers an area of 21,000 m². The main production line consists of the floor line, body-assembling line, welding line, and body-adjusting line. In the workshop, 46 robots are taking their respective responsibility, which fully demonstrates the flexible production, the most advanced technique in the world today.
