Shanghai International Automobile City 上海国际汽车城

Shanghai International Automobile City, located in Jiading District, is planned to cover an area of approximately 70 km2. The automobile city is the birthplace of China's first sedan, the first joint venture of automobile manufacturing and the largest automobile manufacturing base in China. On September 28, 2001, the opening ceremony of the Shanghai International Automobile City was held. Upon the completion of the construction, Shanghai International Automobile City will be the strongest comprehensive facilities as trading, exposition, logistics, information, service, and recreational center in the Asian-Pacific region.

 

Shanghai International Automobile City can perform six functions: 1) to research, develop, and manufacture automobiles, including technical development, vehicle and parts manufacturing; 2) to trade automobiles, including trading of cars, accessories, vans, and second-hand vehicles, and e-business as well; 3) to carry out education and exposition of automobiles, including the exhibition of famous brands, convention and exhibition of automobiles, exposition of automobiles, research and development of automobiles, and educational training as well; 4) to perform the automobile logistics, including storage and transportation, distribution, betterment of supply chains, and reclamation of automobiles as well; 5) to implement cultural tourism of automobiles, including popular sciences, leisure activities, sports, and tourism of automobiles; and 6) to provide one-stop automobile services, including financial, rental, maintenance, training, and club services.

 

Located about 7 km away to the northeast of the automobile city, the construction of the Shanghai International Circuit began on October 17, 2002, and completed in March 2004. It was the venue of the inaugural Formula One Chinese Grand Prix on 26 September 2004. The Shanghai International Circuit covers an area of 5.3 km2, 2.5 km2 for the racetrack and 2.8 km2 for comprehensive facilities. The Shanghai International Circuit was financed by a government-funded joint-venture company, consisting of Shanghai Juss Corporation, Shanghai National Property Management Co. Ltd, and Shanghai Jiading Investment and Development Co. Ltd.

 

The 2.5-km2 circuit is the first project with a total investment of RMB 2.645 billion yuan. The circuit consists of a Formula 1 racetrack and nine different racetracks, which can be used for races of all kinds. The F1 track is 5.4 km long and 13-20 m wide, with its layout resembling the Chinese character shang (上), the first character in the name of the city Shanghai, meaning "above" or "ascend". The other tracks are 1.3 km long and 14-25 m wide. And the circuit has a commanding center, a news center, vehicle service stations, an emergency center, and an in-the-air restaurant, which jointly guarantee the smooth operation of the races.

 

Visitors can witness the assembly line of Passat. They will also see the whole process of steel plates and accessories changing into cars.
