Shanghai Museum of Science and Technology　上海科技馆

Shanghai Museum of Science and Technology, located at No.2000, Century Avenue, Pudong and covering an area of 68000 m² with a floor space of 98000 m², had a total investment of RMB 1.755 billion yuan. For the implementation of the basic national policy "Revitalizing the Nation by Science and Education", Shanghai Municipal Government invested in the construction of this important social and cultural project. And it is also an important site for education, recreation and tourism as well.

At present, the museum has set up the Exploration of the Earth's Crust, the Panorama of Creatures, the Light of Wisdom, the Cradle for Designers, the Exposition of Nature, Audiovisual Paradise, 360° Screen Cinema, 4D Cinema, etc. And it has also been equipped with a conference hall, a souvenir shop, a temporary showroom, a multifunctional restaurant, a fast-food restaurant, a Cafe, a large recreational ground, a plaza, a bank, and other facilities.

Standing in front of the museum, the visitors will immediately see the five Chinese characters, Shang Hai Ke Ji Guan, meaning Shanghai Museum of Science and Technology, which were inscribed by Comrade Jiang Zemin.

Shanghai Museum of Science and Technology is of an asymmetrical structure, low in the west and high in the east, spirally ascending. It was completed in April 2001. On October 21, 2001, the informal 9th Annual APEC Leaders' Meeting was held here. And on December 18, 2001, it was officially open to the public.

Once you step into the lobby, you'll see a yoke-like ball at the center. It symbolizes the conception of life and implies the spaciousness and profoundness of the universe, thus embodying the width of history and the vibration of time.

Exploration of the Earth's Crust is normally the first section to visit. In this section one will experience the hair-raising earthquake and volcanic eruption, and explore the geological changes in the Earth's crust. One will witness the beautiful karst caves, the mysterious world at the bottom of the sea, the hair-raising earthquake and volcanic eruption, and the formation of petroleum, natural gas and coal underground. There is a Time Tunnel, through which the visitor can experience magnitude-8 earthquake at a depth of 870 m in the crust.

In the section of Panorama of Creatures, the hall is full of the ambience of nature in the tropical rainforest. Here different plants are growing at different altitudes: the towering old trees, swinging ivies, layers of rocks, splashing waterfalls, and dingdong fountains, etc.

Ecological Landscaping section is a mysterious animal world, where there are all kinds of insects as large as bulls, sprawling amphibians, groups of bats in the bat cave, etc.

Light of Wisdom section is special for kids. Children can observe the external world and natural phenomena, and participate in scientific practices. Here children can see robots give various performances. The tourist can act as an anchor and hold a dialogue with well-known anchors, and he can also pretend to be a pilot driving a simulated ship to Shanghai, New York, Sydney and other tourist destinations.

The section of Children's Science & Technology Garden is full of kids' interest. There are all kinds of architectural styles, the dream forests in Anderson's fairy tales, melodious music, video telephones, optically controlled airplanes, etc. This is really a children's amusement park, and an excellent place for children to get acquainted with knowledge of science.

The section of the Cradle for Designers is a place where you could tap up your creativity, changing your ideas into reality. It is divided into three parts: masterpieces, visitors' designing, and manufacturing the designs. Exhibited in the masterpieces are the excellent works created by the primary and middle school students in Shanghai. The latter two parts are most popular with tourists, because they could design, on the basis of their imagination, their favorite rooms, clothes, and dancing movements.

In the museum, there are four special cinemas: a 360° screen cinema, a large screen cinema, and two 4D cinemas.

The exhibition of APEC China ― 2001 in Shanghai Museum of Science and Technology narrates to the tourists a historical gala.

The second-term project of the museum will add more exhibition sections that will display richer content and demonstrate more advanced techniques. The project designing has absorbed up-to-date designing notions, partly employing the latest accomplishments in scientific and technological research. Principally there will be such sections as Robots, Virtual World, Light of Exploration, Travel in the Human Body, the Earth as Our Home, Space Travel, etc.
