Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center 上海城市规划展示馆

Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, at No.100 of People's Avenue, is the largest urban planning hall in the world, and has a super deluxe exhibition hall with the largest urban planning models in the world. The center has acquired the Guinness Record of Shanghai Great World.

Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center is right adjacent to Shanghai Municipal Government. With People's Park to its north and opposite to Shanghai Museum, it is a multifunctional hall for exhibition, tourism, business, relaxation, and recreation.

The center occupies an area of 3600 m2, with a floor space of 18000 m2. The entire building is 43.3 m high, and has five stories aboveground and two stories underground. The planning center laid its foundation stone in April 1998, completed in August 1999, and started its trial exhibition in February 2002. The theme of the exhibition was City, People, Environment, and Development, embodying the functions of exhibition: inquiry, exchange, research, publicity and education, and sightseeing. It serves as an important place to introduce Shanghai's "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" in terms of urban planning. Today, this center is both a landmark and a new attraction of tourism in Shanghai.

The first floor in the basement is devoted to the Street of Shanghai in the 1930s, demonstrating the local life of Shanghai at that time with various modern European-style buildings, and lanes of stone-gate houses. The second floor in the basement is the conference room, tidy, spacious, and comfortable, where a variety of lectures, trainings, and seminars can be held.

The first floor of the center is the introductory lobby. There are clusters of huge sculptures of the landmark buildings of Shanghai, which is named Morning of Shanghai. The gorgeous lobby, inlaid with white marble slabs, appears solemn and elegant. Its theme is The Historical Monument. On the west of the lobby, there is a huge relief sculpture A Million People Moving House in Shanghai. Different kinds of activities, such as press conferences, receptions, and parties, can be held here.

The part from the second floor to the fourth floor is the essence of the whole planning center. The architectural models truthfully depict the present and the future of Shanghai. Locals intending to invest in real estate will come here to sound out the possible growth of the city. On the second floor there is the Hall of Planning, Construction and Accomplishment, with a floor space of 1,800 m2, which chiefly introduces the great changes Shanghai has undergone since 1949, and especially since the 1990s, showing that a small change occurs every year and a big change occurs every three years. The entire exhibition falls into six sections, under the theme of Shanghai's Today: Environmental Window; Residences; Planning, Construction, and Accomplishment; Pudong New Area; City Landscaping; and Future Planning and Construction.

General Planning I, which is on the third floor, with an exhibiting area of 2000 m2, displays the general urban planning of Shanghai, the laser sand table, etc. This section contains five parts: the general planning map, social economy of economic development, social economy of industrial layout, social economy of social affairs, and township system planning. The most eye-catching section is the huge Three-dimensional City model within the Inner Ring of Shanghai. The model occupies the center of the hall, covering an area of over 500 m2. It is, at least at present, the largest indoor professional model of urban planning and construction. With a scale of 1:500, the model vividly unfolds the city of Shanghai to the visitors. Any building over six stories can be found here; moreover, it is exactly the same as the real one, differing only in size.

General Planning II, which is on the fourth floor, with an exhibiting area of 1800 m2, puts forward the theme Shanghai's Tomorrow, showing Shanghai from 2001 to 2020. It is the continuation to General Planning I on the third floor. There are the operational steps of Comprehensive Improvement of the Suzhou Creek, the prospective of future urban rail traffic, the model of the expansion of the Pudong International Airport, the planning of the Yangshan deep-water port and the new port city, and a video showing the contrast of Nanjing Road's yesterday and tomorrow.

There is a movie theater and a cafe on the fifth floor. On the top of the building, there is a spacious plaza, where people could appreciate the beautiful scenery of Shanghai or hold business receptions there.
