Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei 蔡元培故居

The Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei is located at No.16, Lane 303, Huashan Road. He is such an outstanding revolutionary and educator in the early 20th century that he has always been referred to as "A model for everyone and a leading authority in the academic field."

The residence is a three-story house, covering an area of over two mu and having a floor space of 526 m2, with a garden in the south. On the first floor there is an exhibition demonstrating his great life. Between the first and second floor is the parlor. And the east room is a library that stores and collects part of the books and letters Cai Yuanpei read and wrote in his lifetime. On the second floor is his bedroom, which is still kept intact. At present, the other rooms are occupied by his sons and daughters, as well as his relatives.

This residence is the last abode in which Cai Yuanpei lived in Shanghai. After the August 13th Incident in 1937, Shanghai fell into the hands of the Japanese invaders. At that time, Cai Yuanpei's house at No.884, Yuyuan Road, was no longer safe while Huashan Road in the French Concession was relatively safer; therefore, the Cai's moved here in October that year.

Cai Yuanpei lived in several places in Shanghai, such as Dengxian Li of Fengyang Road (formerly Burkill Road); Fuyuan Li at Nicheng Bridge; No. 833, Hongqing Li, Wuding Road; No.243, Shengping Street; No.54, Lane 1025, West Nanjing Road (formerly Jessfield Road); and No.884, Yuyuan Road. The residence at Huashan Road is the last place that Cai Yuanpei lived in Shanghai; actually, he lived there only for a little over one month. On November 27, 1937, Cai Yuanpei, accompanied by Ding Xilin and Ye Shengtao, went to Hong Kong. Later he passed away in Hong Kong in 1940, Xu Deyan, Mao Yisheng, Sakong Liao, Ye Shengtao and others raised the proposal that the former residence of Cai Yuanpei in Shanghai should be kept.

At present, the Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei at No.16, Lane 303, Huashan Road, is already a unit of cultural relics under municipal protection in Shanghai, inhabited and taken care of by his daughter and younger brother.
