猴子好动，因而调皮捣蛋，好模仿，故此活泼机灵，深得人们喜爱。我国的神医华佗因受动物运动之启发，首创“五禽戏”，其中就有模仿猴子动作的套路。吴承恩创作《西游记》，那齐天大圣孙悟空能七十二变，一个筋斗能翻出十万八千里，那双火眼金睛闪烁光芒，手执金砸棒还要搔耳抓腮，一副活生生的猴子相。

人类是由类人猿演变进化而来的，人类的许多习气与猿猴密不可分，无怪乎瑞典动植物分类学家林奈感叹道：“丑陋的猿猴与我们人类何其相似！”

无论是东方人还是西方人，都有两个共同的感觉：第一是人类对猴子的亲近感要远胜于对其他动物的亲近感。第二是猴子的好动也是人类，尤其是儿童的天性。这就是世界对猴子寓意所表现出的突出共性。

在我国（China）：

猴（monkey）分别寓意：机灵，乖巧（lceverness/samrtness）”，“精明（sagacity）”，“敏捷（nimblenss）”，“顽皮（mischievous-ness）”，“淘气（naughtiness）”；“恋家（homesickness）”。

三只猴子，其中一只捂着耳朵，一只掩嘴巴，还有一只蒙着眼睛（three monkeys together，each，with hands，covering the mouth and the eyes）：合为寓意：“非礼勿听，非礼勿言，非礼勿视。（Whatever is contrary to Etiquette，do not say，whatever is contrary to Etiquette，do not lister，whatever is contrary to Etiquette，do not look）”

猴骑猴背图（picture of a monkey riding a horse）寓意“马上封侯（will be promoted very soon）”。

猴骑猴背图（picture of a monkey riding on the back of another one）寓意“辈辈封侯（maintain high officials from generation to generation）”。

猴子在枫树上挂印图（picture of a monkey with a seal around its neck in a maple tree）寓意“封侯挂印（be promoted and in command）”，“大权在握（power in hand）”。

白猿献桃（a white monkey presenting a peach）寓意为“祝福长寿（wish of longevity）”。

山魈（mandrll）寓意“魑魅（demon/evil spirits）”。

猿（ape）寓意“心猿意马（restlessness/waver）”，“心神不定（inattentiveness）”。

在欧美（the West）：

猴（monkey）分别寓意“淘气（naughtiness）”，“淘气鬼（mischievous imp）”，“捣蛋鬼（trouble-maker）”，“顽童（naughty boy）”，“模仿（imitation）”。

猿（ape）寓意“傻瓜（fool）”，“粗野笨拙大汉（rude and strpid guy）”。

在非洲喀喀麦隆、刚果和加蓬（Cameroon，Congo and Gabon in Africa）：

山魈（mandrill）寓意“鬼怪（monster/devil）”，“山怪（mountain spirit）”。

在埃及（Egypt）：

狒狒（baboon）寓意“神兽（sacred animal）”。

在印度尼西亚（Indonesia）：

猩猩（Orangutan）寓意“血腥（bllodshed）”，“淫欲（lasciviousness/lust）”。
