3.1 Scientific determination of the structure of solids
nSolids can have several forms or symmetries.
nTo elucidate the structure of solids in more detail, at least three postulates apply:
nFirst, the formation of a solid results froma symmetrical “stacking” of atoms to near infinity from atoms or molecules with spacings is much smaller than those found in the liquid or gaseous state.
nA lattice is defined as a set of three-dimensional points, having a certain symmetry. These points may, or may not, be totally occupied by the atoms composing the structure.—A lattice is not a structure per se.
