蒹葭

Where's she?

蒹葭苍苍，

Green, green the reed,

初生的芦苇色青苍，

白露为霜。

Frost and dew gleam

夜来白露凝成霜。

所谓伊人，

Where's she I need?

所说的那个人，

在水一方。

Beyond the stream.

在水的那一方。

溯洄[2]从之，

Upstream I go;

逆水而上去找她，

道阻且长；

The way's so long.

道路崎岖长又长；

溯游[3]从之，

And downstream, lo!

顺流而下去寻她，

宛在水中央。

She's thereamong.

仿佛在那水中央。

蒹葭萋萋，

White, white the reed,

芦苇长得很茂盛，

白露未晞[4]。

Dew not yet dried.

路上白露还未干。

所谓伊人，

Where's she I need?

所说的那个人，

在水之湄[5]。

On the other side.

在那水草滩。

溯洄从之，

Upstream I go;

逆水而上去找她，

道阻且跻；

Hard is the way.

道路崎岖难攀登；

溯游从之，

And downstream, lo!

顺流而下去寻她，

宛在水中坻[6]。

She's far away.

仿佛在那水中沙滩。

蒹葭采采，

Bright, bright the reed,

芦苇长得连成片，

白露未已。

With frost dews blend.

路上白露没有干。

所谓伊人，

Where's she I need?

所说的那个人，

在水之涘[7]。

At river's end.

在水的那一岸。

溯洄从之，

Upstream I go;

逆水而上去找她，

道阻且右；

The way does wind.

道路崎岖弯又弯；

溯游从之，

And downstream, lo!

顺流而下去寻她，

宛在水中沚[8]。

She's far behind.

仿佛在那水中小洲。

This was said to be the first symbolic love song in Chinese poetry.
