The co-operative principle
The co-operative principle
As proposed by Grice, a shared assumption by the parties in a conversation that they will co-operate with each other for the purpose of their talk by keeping to certain conventional maxims.
Herbert Paul Grice
Make your contribution such as required at the stage at which it occurs by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged.
One of these maxims or negotiating rules is what Grice refers to as the quantity maxim: do not provide more, or less, information than is necessary.
