This is My Chinese Dream
Astronomy enthusiast Shiying Wu, a 71-year-old farmer from Shiyan in Hubei Province, has spent many years building an astronomical observatory in his own home.
Wu developed a keen interest in astronomy when he was 14 years old. Wu is not rich, and he has spent most of his savings in building the astronomical observatory, purchasing telescopes and astronomy books, and attending space-related conferences over the past two decades. He has traveled to more than 30 Chinese provinces and regions to find the best locations to observe eclipses and constellations. He has seen the solar eclipse 11 times, and taken part in star parties on eight occasions. He even made a speech at the star party in Qinghai Province in 2018.
Many of his fellow villagers see Wu as a crazy man, but Chinese netizens call him the "modern Kuafu", a giant figure of Chinese mythology who spent his whole life chasing the sun.
While "chasing the sun", Wu visits observatories in various parts of China, which inspired him to come up with the idea of building an observatory in his home in 2015. Due to the lack of funds, Wu and his sons try to use materials they can get locally and build everything on their own. So far, the observatory has two platforms and needs more equipment. Although it's still simple, Wu is happy to have a place from which he and the children in his hometown can observe astronomical phenomena.
Wu expects to finish the observatory at the end of this year and turn it into a simple astronomical education base for children in his hometown.
"I want more people to enjoy the mysterious and colorful starry sky and observethe amazing world of outer space." Wu said. "Although most of my fellow villagers don't think this is a good idea, I won't give up. Everyone lives with a dream; this is my dream, my Chinese dream, and I will spend the rest of my life to fulfill this dream."
