• The reading material is offered with the aim to persuade readers:

  (1)  The human mind is, by nature, egocentric and sociocentric. All 

        humans regularly engage in both forms of irrational thought.

  (2) Because of egocentrism and sociocentrism, most people assume

        the correctness of their own beliefs and those of their groups.

  (3) Egocentricity and sociocentricity function at the unconscious or

       subconscious level. Thus, we, to think critically, need to recognize

       their power and potential harm while working to overcome our

       native egocentric and sociocentric tendencies. 

  (4) Humans develop as rational persons only to the extent that they

       take explicit command of, and thus minimize, their egocentricity
