1. Difficult sentences

1) Books are to mankind what memory is to the individual. (Para. 1)

In this sentence, “analogy” is used. Analogy is a cognitive process of transferring information or meaning from one particular subject to another particular subject, which share some similar features. For example, "I feel like a fish out of water." which implies that a person is not comfortable in his/her surroundings.

Falling in love is like falling asleep in class. You weren't supposed to, but you did.

Potential is like a diamond in the rough. You know there is value, but it just needs to be polished first.

4) suffering (Para. 1): n. physical or mental pain

eg. This war has caused widespread human suffering.

5) delight (Para. 1): n. a feeling of great pleasure

eg. Sampling the local cuisine is one of the delights of a holiday abroad.

Jennifer squealed with delight and hugged me.

6) owe … to (Para.  3): to exist or be successful because of the help or influence of sb. / sth.; give the credit to感激; 欠…债; 应归功于; 怀有情感

We owe to Newton the principle of gravitation.

7) account (Para.  3):n. a written or spoken description of sth. that has happened; an explanation or a description of an idea, a theory or a process                        账，账目;存款;记述，报告;理由

eg. I had two accounts with Natwest, a savings account and a current account.

8) in full cry (Para.  3): making loud noises while hunting an animal; talking or shouting loudly and in an enthusiastic way

eg. Water is becoming an increasingly precious resource.

Spring rain is as precious as oil. 春雨贵如油。

My country is rich in cinnamon, cloves, ginger, pepper, and precious stones. 我国盛产肉桂、丁香、生姜、胡椒和宝石。

13) stir (Para.  7): v. to move, or to make sb. move, in order to do sth.; to make sth. move slightly搅拌;（使）移动;（使）行动;（使）微动;vt.使打起精神;使奋起;叫醒;唤起;vi.苏醒;奋起;传播;发生

eg.  Stir the soup for a few seconds 将汤搅和几秒钟。
