Paraphrase: When you mention “genius”, you may immediately think of

 his name.

genius: 1) exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability 天赋

come/spring to mind: if sth. comes/springs to your mind, you suddenly remember or think of it

Paraphrase: The picture of Einstein with his special and unique hairstyle came to be a widespread image in pop culture.

Analysis: The adjective “distinctive” refers to the uniqueness of Einstein’s hairstyle. And the noun “icon” refers to his importance and representativeness.

distinctive: having a quality or characteristic that makes sth. different and easily noticed 与众不同的;有特色的

 e.g. Beijing opera has a distinctive artistic style.

classical: adj. relating to music that is considered to be important and serious and that has a value that continues for a long time

10. The inspector reported that “a student called Einstein shone in a deeply felt performance of an adagio from one of the Beethoven sonatas.” In addition to his prowess on the violin, he also played the piano and, in particular, loved to improvise.

Paraphrase: The teacher supervising the examination said that a student named Einstein played an adagio from one of the Beethoven sonatas so well that the audience were deeply impressed by his performance. Besides his outstanding skill in playing the violin, he had also shown a great inventive power of playing the piano.

Analysis: This sentence tells us that Einstein loved music and his music gift is also very amazing. It shows two aspects of Einstein’s musical talent. He was great at playing the violin and the piano.

shine: v. to be very good at sth.

e.g. The lead actress really shines in her role as Lady Macbeth.

She has set a shining example of devotion to the scientific cause.

improvise: v. to invent music, the words in a play, a statement, etc. while you are playing or speaking, instead of planning it in advance

e.g. He improvised on the melody.

她没有准备演讲,所以突然之间她只得即兴讲几句。

She hadn’t prepared a speech so she suddenly had to improvise.

strike: to produce a musical note, sound, etc. by pressing a key or hitting

jot down: to write sth. quickly

e.g. He was a great fighter, but he ended up surrounded by enemies and  

had to flee and take refuge in the Sanctuary.

reveal: to make sth. known to sb.
