Reading for the Main Idea: Telling the Difference Between the General Idea and Details

识别段落主题句的一个方法是识别哪个句子是概括性的,哪些句子表达的是细节。比如在下面的几个句子中:

Cheaper sensor technology makes the Internet of Things possible.

Sensors that detect temperature, position, and people’s faces will be able to constantly observe the world.

This will give people access to much more data than ever before, in real time.

Artificial intelligence systems will analyze this data and use it to accomplish tasks, learn, and communicate with people.

For example, sensors in a farmer’s field could monitor the soil and weather, giving an AI system the data it needs to determine the best time to water or fertilize the crops.

Eventually, all devices could learn to know what people need and want before they even ask.

第一句是概括性的,其余是有关“Cheaper sensor technology makes the Internet of Things possible”的种种细节。

再如下面有关IoT的段落。第一句是概括性的,其余都是“how big”的细节。

Big and getting bigger — there are already more connected things than people in the world. Analyst Gartner calculates that around 8.4 billion IoT devices were in use in 2017, up 31 percent from 2016, and this will likely reach 20.4 billion by 2020. Total spending on IoT endpoints and services will reach almost $2tn(两万亿) in 2017, with two-thirds of those devices found in China, North America and Western Europe, said Gartner.
