Unit 2 TECHNOLOGY
Teaching objectives: after learning this unit, students will:
1.Get some knowledge of technology.
2.Use reading skills (recognizing text organization/structure, paying attention to statistics, understanding paraphrasing) to improve reading comprehension.
3.Use listening skills (handling unfamiliar words, understanding vocabulary from context) to improve listening comprehension.
4.Write a body paragraph and an appropriate topic sentence for an academic essay.
5.Keep a discussion going and discuss the pros and cons in an academic discussion.

Teaching contents:
Session 1
1. Discuss the questions in Before Reading.
Imagine you are living in 2050 with various new technical devices around you as presented in the pictures. Answer the following questions and discuss how people travel and communicate in the future.
(1) Are there auto-driving buses for public transport?
(2) Can people drive flying cars to get around?
(3) Are people only communicating through digital devices?
(4) Can people feel the “touch” of others via long-distance communication?
2. Skim the text and try to recognizing the structure of it.
Task: Scan the text and complete the following notes to rebuild the text.
Para. 1: Background information: The Internet in history.
Para. 2: The author’s central point: The Internet will develop to be pervasive.
Paras. 3-6: How the central point is supported and developed:
Para. 3: Wireless networks will be the primary access point for most devices.
Paras. 4-5: We will view the digital world in various ways.
