Chinese martial arts, or Chinese kung fu, are deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture. They are traditional Chinese sports which apply the art of attack and defense (防御) in fight with a number of skills and tricks. 

Central to Chinese martial arts are the Confucian ideas of both “the mean (中庸) and harmony (和谐)” and “cultivating (培养) qi”. Martial arts also reflect thoughts of Daoism and Buddhism. 

Chinese martial arts have a long history, with various sects (门派) and different styles. An important aspect of Chinese martial arts is combining hardness and softness when you move. It’s also important to train your mind, not just your body. Chinese martial  arts share the ancient thinkers’ ways of thinking about life and the world. The 18 kinds of martial arts named by the later generations involve the skills of bare-handed boxing, such as shadow boxing, form and will boxing, eight-trigram (八卦) palm, and the skills of using swords and many other different kinds of weapons.
