II. Please watch a video clip and get to know the Mogao Caves.
Dunhuang, in Gansu Province in China, is at an important point on the Silk Road. Among all the attractions in Dunhuang, the Mogao Caves are the most famous around the world.
The Mogao Caves are home to a rich collection of Buddhist artworks — more than 3,000 colored sculptures and 45,000 square meters of murals are located across over 700 man-made caves carved along a rock face.
In Cave 275, one of the oldest caves in Mogao, for example, there is a relatively large statue in front of the main wall. The statue, 3.4 meters tall, is the largest of the early period. The statue of Maitreya has a round face and a calm expression. On the handsome face, there are very long ear loops, a straight nose, well-shaped lips, and lightly protruding eyes, which are looking down compassionately on the visitors. Wearing a crown containing three round jewels, he sits cross-ankled. His sitting pose and decoration, as well as the triangular backrest, suggest influences from Central Asia.
Murals in this cave illustrate the Buddhist stories. Each of them consists of several episodes within a single rectangular space, with different depictions of the same person to represent different times and places within the same scene. The main figures in all scenes are always larger in size. All the figures are dressed and decorated in Central Asian style.
These sculptures and murals not only reflect part of the social life from the 5th century to the 14th century, but also show the development of plastic arts during that time. As evidence of the evolution of Buddhist art in the northwest region of China, the Mogao Caves are of unmatched historical value. In 1987, the UNESCO listed the Mogao Caves as one of the World Heritage Sites.
