The girl Terry Fox

    1.  Hi, I’m Estelle. Some people like to call me “The Girl Terry Fox”. When I was 13, I had bone cancer in one of my legs. ①Before long, it spread to my other leg. The doctors at the hospital did many tests on me and discovered that part of my legs had to be cut off. They would give me prostheses so I could at least walk. I was really scared, and sad too, because I’d always loved sports, especially running. The doctors said that I would never be able to run again. I was crushed.

    2.  Running was my biggest passion. I refused to let myself be stopped. ②At first when I got my prostheses, I could barely move them. But soon with practice, I could walk with crutches. My best friend Gina was my personal trainer, and we trained every day. With her help, I soon could walk without crutches. And finally, I could run again! I was overjoyed and proud of myself for beating the odds.

    3.  Afterward, I wanted to do something to help other people with cancer, so I decided to join the marathon for cancer in my district. In this race, people bet on a winner, but the winner doesn’t get the money — all the money goes to cancer research. I was so excited, but nervous too, since the first time I ran, one of the screws on my right prosthesis broke. I was afraid it would happen again. ③But Gina helped me through it, and to my surprise, I won the race!④ I felt great knowing that a lot of people had bet on me and that all the money was going to help people like me who fight for their lives every single day.

    4.  Cancer is a curse, but it can also be a gift, a lesson.⑤ I learned that cancer doesn’t have to stop you from doing what you love, and that it surely doesn’t have to kill you. It’s just another obstacle, another hurdle you have to jump over, another enemy you have to defeat in order to succeed in life. Hopefully, though, in the future, we’ll have one less hurdle to jump over. There is no cure for cancer yet, but somebody’s going to find one, and it’s going to be me.
