Professional nurses who select PHN/CHN as a career need outstanding ability to adjust to many types of environments with a variety of living conditions, from the well-to-do in a high-rise apartment to the most poverty stricken in a ghetto or rural area, and to appreciate a wide range of interests, attitudes, educational backgrounds, and cultural differences. They must be able to accept these variations, to understand the differences, to communicate well so as to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations and to give equally good nursing care to all. PHN/CHNs in any position must use excellent judgment and are expected to use their own initiative. They have the opportunity to work with persons in other disciplines and other social agencies to help provide needed services to the clients, including financial counseling, legal aid, housing problems, family planning, marital counseling, and school difficulties. In some instances, PHNs/CHNs are not only case finders but case coordinators-patients' advocates in every sense.
