Visiting nurses, or home health nurses, regardless of their places of employment, also carry out these functions and may in addition, give physical care and treatments. With the advent of much earlier discharge from hospitals, patients are quite a bit sicker when they go home, and these nurses are required to know how to care for the acutely ill. If the nurse assessment indicates that such care does not require professional nurse services, home health aides/homemakers may be assigned to a patient/family, with nurse supervision and reassessment. Visiting nurses have also set up clinics that they visit periodically in senior citizen centers or apartments, as well as in the single-room occupancy(SRO) hotels commonly used for welfare clients in large cities. There are also many liaison roles with hospitals, health maintenance organizations(HMOs), clinics, geriatric units, and various residences for the long-term disabled and mentally ill or retarded, primarily to assist in admission and discharge planning, as well as coordinating continuing patient care.
