Identifying References

In order to avoid repetition of a word or a phrase in writing, reference words are often used to substitute the words that have been mentioned. While reading, readers need to identify these references and understand the antecedents. Generally speaking, readers can identify the references according to the subject-verb agreement, sentence structure, and semantic relations.
