Job interviews
The job interview is the opportunity to show those aspects of yourprofessional life and personality that cannot be written in a CV. There aremany things that can ruin your interview. Here are some of the worst reasonswhy you did not get the job.
1. _____________________________________
This is still one of the most common mistakes candidates make wheninvited to a job interview. Showing up on time is very important. Find outwhere the interview will be and how to get there. Give yourself enough time forthings like traffic jams or incidents that might make you late.
2. _____________________________________
It does not help if candidates show up for their interviews and haveno idea about what the company does. Do a little research about the company —find out how many people it employs, what are its areas of focus, what aretheir goals and future plans.
3. _____________________________________
Before you even say the first word, the interviewer will have alreadyjudged you on the basis of what you are wearing. Coming to the interview withuntidy clothes like old jeans is not going to make the right impression. Nor ischewing gum during the interview.
Look professional. Boys should make sure their ties are classic, shoes polished, suits dark and clean, hair brushed and teeth clean. The samegoes for girls — dress should be formal and makeup invisible.
4. _____________________________________
You must listen to the interviewer’s questions and provide relevantanswers. Prepare and practise your answers, but make them sound natural whenyou actually speak to the interviewer.
5. _____________________________________
Lots of job seekers get many letters of rejection or no answers atall. Then, when they finally get an invitation to go for an interview, theycannot hide how unsure they are. The trick is to simply expect to do great.Give the interviewer a firm handshake when you say hello. This shows that youfeel confident (even if you don’t.) and will make a better impression.
6. _____________________________________
You were restless when waiting for your interview, your handshakewas limp and you did not look at the interviewer. Show that you are in controlof yourself. This is an important factor for our future employers. During theinterview itself don’t cross your arms. Sit forward and make eye contact.
7. _____________________________________
At the end of the interview, the interviewer will usually askwhether you’ve got any questions. If you say “no”, this does not make a goodimpression. Ask about important aspects of the job, not holidays or employeeperks.
8. _____________________________________
You have to make the most of the short interview time to make animpression and show that you have the necessary skill required for the job. When talking about your successful projects make sure to refer to opinions ofothers, such as People say that I deliver my projects on time and withinbudget.
9. _____________________________________
It’s important to follow up the interview with a thankyou note. It’sbest to send an email to the interviewer, thanking him for the opportunity andrepeating your interest in the position. This will take you minutes, but canhave a great influence on the outcome of your interview.
