 Celebrated on 26 January,the official national day of Australia, commemorating the establishment of thefirst European settlement on the continent of Australia. It is also known asAnniversary Day& Foundation Day. On the eve of Australia Day, the PrimeMinister announces the winner of the Australian of the Year award, presented toan Australian, who has shown a "significant contribution to the Australiancommunity and nation", and is an “inspirational role model for the Australiancommunity” .
