General entry requirements

 Behind the Parliament building, modest Queen's Park is bordered by the variousfaculties of the University of Toronto. Opened in 1843, the University ofToronto is the largest university in Canada and the 5th largest in North America. The University of Toronto awards 7,800 undergraduate degrees, 1,800 master's degrees and 430 doctoral degrees each year. Students can study in 14 different faculties and in 9 different major departments or schools.

Theorigin of University of Toronto dates back to 1827, when John Strachan obtaineda royal charter for King’s College, the colony’s first institution of higherlearning. •Thenew university, controlled by the Church of England, offered its first coursesin 1843 and granted its first degrees a year later. •King’sCollege was secularized by the provincial government in 1849 and renamed theUniversity of Toronto, designating it the “provincial university”. •In1887, provincial legislation authorized the federation of other colleges anduniversities. University of Toronto. Victoria University, Knox and Wycliffecolleges joined in 1889, followed by Trinity in 1904 and St. Michael’s in 1911.•Thisarrangement guaranteed the colleges their autonomy and character whileproviding students with access to the facilities of a larger university.
