Step3.  What functions do teachers’ instructions have?

1. Task 3.3.1

Ss make a list of functions of teacher’s  talk. And discuss what type of language do teachers normally use and why.

Functions:  give instructions,  control discipline, praise, ask questions, set up tasks, provide information,  tell stories, explain things, demonstrate, provide examples, check  understanding, give feedback and assign homework, etc.

2. Practice

Give some instructions to the Ss to  group.(see PPT)

3. Discussion point

Ss categorize classroom instructions  according to the functions first by themselves.

Teaching purpose: explaining,  questioning, storytelling, provide information, give feedback, etc

Managing purpose: controlling discipline,  getting pupils’ attention, grouping pupils

Step4.  How to give effective instructions

1. Present case.1 to Ss to discuss.

Watch the video, and analyze the  teachers’ instructions in class.(see 用语示范.avi)

Ss discuss first, and talk about the  opinion about how teachers should give instructions to the case?

2. Discussion points

   Pronunciation  is clear and accurate

Intonation is natural and vivid

Words: Boys and girl…

Create silence  -   pause : to pace the instructions

Make eye-contact as many  Ss as possible: to check and show your care

2) How can we make our instructions clearer?

Use simple  and clear words for the essential information(short, comprehensible, pause)

Use body  language: clarify the meaning, demonstrate (see instruction4.flv)

  Change words  and repeat

  Sequence

All in all, we should make a good preparation.

3) How to check Ss’ understanding?

  Ask: ‘understand?  Clear?...

Ask Ss to  translate or do the activity (see instruction5.flv)
