Activity 1:


Use some words to describe one of your classmate, and let your team member guess.


Activity  2:

Discuss in groups tofind out suggestions to overcome the worries and then pick out two worries andthe suggestions to present to the class.

1  Worry: What if I spend too much money beforeI realize it?

Suggestion: Take a record of everypenny you spend and make a plan on a monthly basis.

2   Worry: What if I am too busy with clubs andfind no time for study?

Suggestion: Choose a few you really like and focus on it and work out a calendar to balance club activities andstudy.

Activity  3:

“Open communication” is a golden rule in dealing with roommates. When problems appear, you need to have a one-on-one talk with your roommates. But conducting a talk is a skill. The following expressions are used to ask people to do something. Put them into the right order from the least polite to the most.                    

①I’d appreciate it if you could turn down the music.

②Turn down the music.

③Would you mind turning down the music?

④I wonder if you could please turn down the music.

Activity  4: case study

You are a freshman now, your new roommates share a dorm roomwith you, but you find that you arecompletely different,you have different politicalviews,sometimes you have arguments; suppose one guy seldom taking showers, or rarelywashing clothes,one guy makes long-time phonescalls every night,which disturb your rest; one guy often usesyour personal item without asking. How to get along with your new roommates in this case?

Learning to deal with problems is partof your life.

Work in pairs.Role-play a conversation as if you have the following problems to workout. Try to talk with your partner in a polite way.

A: I know how troublesome it is to put all the stuff in the right place, but Jenny, if       

     you leave things all over the place, we’ll be in trouble even moving around.

B: I know, I know. But I don’t know how to get them right.

A: Well, let me help you.

B: Thank you. I need some time to get adjusted to the dorm life, I guess.

A: I’ve got to say, you do.

② 

A: Allen, have you seen my iPod?

B: Oh, It’s in the pocket of my jacket. I need some music while jogging, and mine

     just didn’t work this morning.

A: Well, I don’t mind sharing with you this or that, but I do mind that you take it

without asking.

B: Oh, sorry. I’ll ask next time.

A: That’s OK.

 A: Bob, do you have time? I think we should have a talk.

B: Sure. What’s up?

A: Can you do your laundry more frequently? Say, twice a week?

B: Why? What’s the problem?

A: You know, I’m kind of neat freak, and I really can’t bear the smell in our room.

B: All right. Then I’ll do my best.

A: Thanks a lot.

 A: Mike, I hate to say this, but would you mind shortening your phone

      conversations a little bit?

B: Have I disturbed you?

A: To be honest, yes. I can’t sleep with your talking around.

B: Oh, sorry for that. I’ll talk with them outside of the room next time.

A: Thanks.

B: Don’t mention that.

 A: It seems that you like my bed very much, John.

B: Oh, I picked up an interesting book on your shelf and read a few lines here.

A: I like reading in bed too, in my own bed, I mean. But I would feel awkward lying

     in other’s bed.

B: Oh, I see. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that.

Activity 5:

Think back about thetalks you have had with your partner. Were they polite and effective (有效的)? Can you summarize some rules to help your talk with the roommates to go well?

EXAMPLE:

  One day at noon,when I was walking out of the library, it was raining cats and dogs, but Ididn’t have an umbrella. I stood there wishing the rain would stop soon. Then agirl walked out of the building. She looked at me and said, “Do You need help?I can share my umbrella with you if you are heading to the canteen.” How nice! We went to the Canteen together. That’s a sweet memory.

Activity  7Reinvent Yourself at College
