Sentence

        1. Twoseparate systems are required to ensure that a gas turbine engine will startsatisfactorily. Firstly, provision must be made for the compressor and turbineto be rotated up to a speed at which adequate air passes into the combustionsystem to mix with fuel from the fuel spray nozzles (Part 10). Secondly, provision must be made for ignition of the air/fuel mixture in the combustionsystem. During engine starting the two systems must operate simultaneously, yetit must also be possible to motor the engine over without ignition formaintenance checks and to operate only the ignition system for relightingduring flight (para. 28).

        4. Thestarter motor must produce a high torque and transmit it to the engine rotatingassembly in a manner that provides smooth acceleration from rest up to a speedat which the gas flow through the engine provides sufficient power for theengine turbine to take over.

        9. Airstarting is used on most commercial and some military jet engines. It has manyadvantages over other starting systems, and is comparatively light, simple andeconomical to operate.

        14. Agas turbine starter is used for some jet engines and is completelyself-contained. It has its own fuel and ignition system, starting system(usually electric or hydraulic) and self-contained oil system. This type ofstarter is economical to operate and provides a high power output for acomparatively low weight.

        21. Anignition unit may be supplied with direct current (D.C.) and operated by atrembler mechanism or a transistor chopper circuit, or supplied withalternating current (A.C.) and operated by a transformer. The operation of eachtype of unit is described in the subsequent paragraphs.

28.The jet engine requires facilities for relighting should the flame in thecombustion system be extinguished during flight. However, the ability of theengine to relight will vary according to the altitude and forward speed of theaircraft. A typical relight envelope, showing the flight conditions under whichan engine will obtain a satisfactory relight, is shown in fig. 11-14. Withinthe limits of the envelope, the airflow through the engine will rotate thecompressor at a speed satisfactory for relighting; all that is requiredtherefore, provided that a fuel supply is available, is the operation of theignition system. This is provided for by a separate switch that operates onlythe ignition system.
