        2. Allengine parameters require monitoring and instrumentation is provided to informthe pilot of the correct functioning of the various engine systems and to warnof any impending failure. Should any of the automatic governors fail, theengine can be manually controlled by the pilot selecting the desired thrustsetting and monitoring the instruments to maintain the engine within therelevant operating limitations.

In some cases either fan outlet pressure or turbineexhaust pressure are used alone in place of PINT.

        16.The servo motor, through the gears, alters the potentiometer output voltagesignal to the E.P.R. indicator and simultaneously drives the gimbal in the samedirection as the initial yoke movement until the L.V.D.T. signal to the motoris cancelled and the system stabilizes at the new setting.

        19. Atorquemeter system is shown in fig. 12-4. In this system, the axial thrustproduced by the helical gears is opposed by oil pressure acting on a number ofpistons; the pressure required to resist the axial thrust is transmitted to theindicator.

        22.Engine speed indication is electrically transmitted from a small generator,driven by the engine, to an indicator that shows the actual revolutions perminute (r.p.m.), or a percentage of the maximum engine speed (fig. 12-5). Theengine speed is often used to assess engine thrust, but it does not give anabsolute indication of the thrust being produced because inlet temperature andpressure conditions affect the thrust at a given engine speed.

        26. Inaddition to providing an indication of rotor speed, the current induced at thespeed probe can be used to illuminate a warning lamp on the instrument panel toindicate to the pilot that a rotor assembly is turning. This is particularlyimportant at engine start, because it informs the pilot when to open the fuelcock to allow fuel to the engine. The lamp is connected into the slattingcircuit and is illuminated during the starting cycle.

        29.The thermocouple probes used to transmit the temperature signal to theindicator consist of two wires of dissimilar metals that are joined togetherinside a metal guard tube. Transfer holes in the tube allow the exhaust gas toflow across the junction. The materials from which the thermocouples wires aremade are usually nickel-chromium and nickel-aluminium alloys.

        42. Onsome engines, a fuel differential pressure switch, fitted to the low pressurefuel filter, senses the pressure difference across the filter element. Theswitch is connected to a warning lamp that provides indication of partialfilter blockage, with the possibility of fuel starvation.

        47. Acrystal-type vibration transmitter, giving a more reliable indication ofvibration, has been developed for use on multi-spool engines. A system offilters in the electrical circuit to the gauge makes it possible to compare thevibration obtained against a known frequency range and so locate the vibrationsource. A multiple-selector switch enables the pilot to select a specific areato obtain a reading of the level of vibration.

        53.After each flight the magnetic tape is processed by computer and the resultsare analyzed. Any deviation from the normal condition will enable a fault to beidentified and the necessary remedial action to be taken.

        59. Ona multi-engined aircraft, a synchronizing system ensures the propeller speedsare all the same. This is achieved by an electrical system that compares speedsignals from engine-mounted generators. Out-of-balance signals, using oneengine as a master signal, are automatically corrected by electrically trimmingthe engine speeds until all signals are equal.
