To be able to predict costs at different activity levels it is necessary to separate the fixed cost element from the variable cost element.
The high-low method can be used to approximate the variable cost per unit and the total fixed cost.
We need to be able to split semi-variablecost into their fixed and variable components.
Total cost = Total fixed cost + Totalvariable cost
Total variable cost = Variable cost perunit × Activity level (units)
