Life
Han Shaogong
When you perceive the cold of a dog and warm it with a cotton bedding, it may gaze at you a long time after huddling in the kennel. This is the dog’s only way to express its gratitude, for it can't speak.
When you notice the danger of a wounded bird, rescue it from a cat's mouth, heal it with potion, provide it with food, and finally release it into the woods, it may look back at you, too, after flying to a treetop. And like the dog, it is unable to speak, only to show in such a way that it remembers your help. They are, after all, low-intelligence creatures and may soon forget all this. When they happen to see you someday again, they may look at you with strange and careless eyes, and presently turn to look for food and pleasure, paying no attention to the plough or the faggot on your shoulder. They do not bring you pearls and gems, as many fairy tales describe, nor do they drop nectar on your lips when you are dying of thirst. Moreover, they may never look back. But they gazed at you a long time, as if wanting to know more about you, to remember your face as much as possible, and determining to do something beyond what creatures can do.
This moment may soon pass by. But with this moment, the world is no longer the same, no longer the world without this moment. Gone are the eyes of gratitude and trust, but with gratitude and trust spreading in mountain, the mountain has warmth and intimacy. One day, when you walk in the mountain, the mountain may offer you a pleasant shade. If you lose your footing in a ravine covered by grass and trees, the mountain may render you a stone or lend you a branch to stop you from falling into danger. At that moment, you can feel the warmth of a dog or a bird, in the stone or at the treetop.
