Unit One

Part I. Listening one

: Meeting a business partner at the airport

Chen Lin:Good morning. You must be Mr Lohmann.

Martin: Yes, that’s right.

Chen Lin:I’m Chen Lin, Mr Li’s personal assistant. How do you do?

Martin: How do you do?

Chen Lin:How was your flight?

Martin: Fine, but a bit full. However, I managed to sleep a little.

Chen Lin:I see that the flight was delayed by three hours.

Martin: Yes it was. There was a problem with one of the engines, but I had chance to have another look at the report you sent us while waiting for the plane. It was very interesting and looks very good.

Chen Lin:Well, Mr Li is waiting for you at the office. The taxi is waiting over there.

Martin: Good, but could we go to the hotel first? I’d like to check in and …

Language points:

There was a problem with one of the engines, but I had chance to have another look at the report you sent us while waiting for the plane.

One of the engines went wrong, but this gave me more time to read the report you sent us again when I was waiting for the plane.

have chance to do sth: 有机会做某事

e.g. (1) Tourists have chance to experience a completely different culture.

            游客有机会体验一种完全不同的文化。

      (2) It is estimated that more than one third people don’t have chance to enjoy the medical health service.

            估计有超过三分之一的人口没有机会享受医疗保健服务。

Part II. Listening Two: Welcoming visitors to a cmpany

Li Ming:Mr Lohmann! How do you do? I’m Li Ming. Welcome to Shanghai Excavation Machinery.

Martin: How do you do, Mr Li? It’s nice to meet you at last. But please call me Martin. Here is my business card.

Li Ming: Thank you, Martin. And here is mine. Is this your first visit to Shanghai?

Martin: Yes, it is. It is a very busy city, isn’t it?

Li Ming: Yes, it is. There are over 16 million people here. And what about where you live?

Martin: Klettgau? Oh, we only have a population of about 7,500.

Li Ming: That sounds nice. Now, can I offer you something to drink?

Martin: A glass of water would be great. Thanks.

Language points:

And what about where you live?

What is it like where you live?

what about: 怎么样

e.g. (1) Thank you. What about you son? 谢谢。你儿子怎么样了?

       (2) What about those of us who have average children? 我们这种有普通孩子的人怎么样呢?

Part III. Listening Three: Talking about yourself and your company

A: My name is Wayne Muller. I am a pharmacist. My company is based in North Chicago. We are one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world. We develop medicines. I enjoy working for a big company because it offers a lot of opportunities for my career. Next month I will be in charge of the R&D department.

B: Hello, my name is Thomas Esser. I am an electrical engineer. I work for a small family company in Lippstadt in Germany. My job is in quality control. I have to see that the products meet our high standards. Everybody is very friendly, which, I think, is one of the reasons that I enjoy my job. I would hate to work in a big company.

C: Good afternoon. I am Hideki Tamaguchi and I’m a banker. I live and work in Tokyo, Japan. We have offices in many cities around the world, for example, New York and London. That is one of the reasons that I have to improve my English. I would love to spend some time in our office in England or America.

Part IV. Listening Four:Talking about IKEA

IKEA offers the same range of goods in Shanghai, Moscow, New York and London. The company’s strategy is to concentrate on the 267 existing stores and expand them. At the moment Europe leads the market with 80% of sales, followed by North America with 15% and Asia with 5%. IKEA needs to strengthen its position in the Russian and Chinese markets. Both of these markets have very big potential for IKEA. There are a lot of people there who do not earn so much, which is perfect for IKEA’s concept.

Part V. Viewing:A good idea

Tim: I’ve decided to invent butter in a stick. That way I can spread my toast faster.

Robert: Too late.

Tim: What do you mean “too late”?

Robert: Well, somebody has already invented it. I saw it on TV last week.

Tim: Hmm. I would really like to invent something, sell it and become rich. That way I don’t have to go to school any more.

Robert: But you would have to get somebody to manufacture it, and that costs money.

Tim: But I could still sell my idea. I mean, look at Steve Jobs. He and his friends manufactured the Apple computers in his garage.

Robert: But we don’t have a garage.

Tim: That’s not the point.

Robert: What is the point?

Tim: The point is that if you have a good idea, you can develop it, sell it, and get rich.

Robert: Mmm, now I see the problem.

Tim: Yeah?

Robert: You need a good idea!

Tim: Hah! Just wait. When I have a good idea, then …

Robert: Then what? Have you had a good idea lately?

Mr Lessing: I have a great idea!

Robert: You do?

Mr Lessing: Yes. How about you boys putting the breakfast things in the kitchen and then getting ready for school?

Tim / Robert: Oh, Dad!

Language points:

I would really like to invent something, sell it and become rich.

I really wish that I could invent something, sell it and become rich.

would like to: 想要

e.g. (1) I am wondering whether your holiday plan has been made or not. If not, maybe you would like to do it with me.

           不知道你是否已经做好度假计划。如果还没有,或许你愿意和我一起去度假。

      (2) How many of you would like to have something like that? 你们当中有多少人想要这样的东西呢?
