Jocelyn is now on the coach. She will take her American tour to visit Tian’ anmen Square.
J: Jocelyn, a tour guide L: Lori, a tour leader S : Mrs. Smith, a tourist
J: Good morning, everyone. Is everybody here Lori?
L: (counting the guests) Yes, everyone’ s on the coach. We may go now.
J: Now, ladies and gentleman, did you sleep well last night? It’ s 9:30 a.m., so please set your watches by the local time. Now we’ re driving to the first stop—Tian’ an Men Square. It will take us about 45 minutes to get there.
S: Oh, Tian’ an Men Square, the largest urban square in the world.
J: That’ s right. On your left is our Economical Zone for the Development of New Technology. It is divided into two areas, the business center and the residential quarter. There are several grand hotel and some office buildings for investors and businessmen. Now on your right is the vast green field.
S: What’ s that on the horizon, a palace?
J: That’ s the Chinese ancient building built in Qing Dynasty, about 300 years ago. It was used at the time as the imperial summer palace.
L: Gorgeous! What a beautiful view—the green field with the red ochre.
J: Here we are. This is Tian’ an Men Square.
S: My God. What a huge place!
J: See that building over there?
L: Yes, it’ s magnificent. I suppose that must be the Great Hall of the People.
J: Right. You may be interested to know that the construction of the whole building took less than a year.
L: Really! That’ amazing!
J: Look at that monument. It’ s the Monument to the People’ s Heroes. Here you can trace the history of China from its earliest beginning to the modern. To your right is the Rostrum of the Gate of Heavenly Peace. On the west side of the square and south of Chang’ an Avenue is the Great Hall of the People. Now let’ s have a stroll around the square. This is the world-famous Forbidden City where once emperors, empresses and their families lived.
L: Oh, it’ s gorgeous and elaborate, indeed.
S: You call it the Palace Museum now, right?
J: Yes. As far as I know, it’ s the largest existing imperial palace in the world today.
S: It really feasts my eyes!

Zhang Ling: Hello, everyone. We are now at the entrance to the town. Please check your watches. It’s 8:30. You may choose to follow me through the town, or visit it by yourself. Please don’t forget we’ll meet here again in four hours, that is, at 12:30. Then we’ll go for dinner.
Mrs. Brown: Marvellous! The houses here look quite different from those in big cities. I feel as if I was back in ancient times.
Zhang Ling: That’s exactly the point I was about to make. You meet history here in north western Yunnan Province. The Old Town of Lijiang has a history of more than 800 years. It was built during the late Song Dynasty. The locals are chiefly Naxi people. The residents also include Bai and Tibetan peoples. The most common forms of the houses here are the “three two-storeyed houses with one screen wall” (三坊一照壁) and the “five-patio courtyard” (四合五天井), which are the typical ancient styles of the dwellings found in the Central Plains region and the regions inhabited by the Bai and Tibetan peoples.
Mr. White: Hey, look! Brooks run along both sides of the street, in front of the houses.
Zhang Ling: Yes. This is one of the most attractive features of the town. If you move along, you see it has the beauty of both a waterside town and a mountain town — surrounded by green hills on three sides. In 1997, the Old Town of Lijiang became a World Cultural Heritage Site, and the characters for “World Cultural Heritage” on that white screen were inscribed by the former president Jiang Zemin.
( ) 1. At the entrance to the town, the tour guide tells the tourists the meeting time.
