1) From Text A, we have learned how to give criticism. Make a sentence with each and read it out loud.
— The trouble with (Linda) is that s/he never (DOES)…
— Do you think you could (DO) …?
— Oh (Linda)! Couldn’t you (DO) …?
— I’m beginning to get rather tired of (Linda DOING) ...
— Do you think (Linda) tends to (DO) …
— Oh (Linda)! You could have (DONE) …
— The trouble with (Linda) is that s/he is always (DOING)…
— Oh (Scott)! I do wish you would(n’t) (DO)…
— I’m beginning to get rather tired of the way + SENTENCE.
— I’m sick and tired of the way + SENTENCE.
— Oh (Scott)! I do wish you had(n’t) (DONE)…
— I’m sick and tired of (Linda DOING) ...
— How about not (DOING)…?
2) Play the roles of Judy and Scott in the following dialogue after reading it loud, paying attention to the underlined expressions.
Judy: Do you think Paul tends to borrow money from others?
Scott: Yes, it is a problem, isn’t it? The trouble with him is that he never returns the money.
Judy: That’s right. He still owes me some money.
Scott: And he does me, too. I’m sick and tired of him going on like this.
Judy: I know how you feel. We’ve got to put a stop to it. Oh Scott, I do wish you wouldn’t lend him money next time!
Scott: Hey, and what about you? How about not criticizing the wrong person? After all, we’re in the same boat.
Judy: Sorry, I see what you mean. Let’s promise together.
Scott: Sounds good to me.

*Tell class how to give constructive criticism. The following serves as an example.
Topic: How to Give Constructive Criticism
As you know, it is important to accept criticism as a fact of life. Avoiding or fearing it is no way to deal with the issue. But how can we make sure that criticism is not taken personally? It depends on how we make it constructive.
Focus on the thing that (has or hasn’t) happened, not the person. Otherwise, you can make the person angry. Your critique should be free of personal opinion or bias.
Be specific. Don’t make it vague or general. Try to get to the point.
Be valid. Make your comment(s) relevant and meaningful.
Choose your words wisely. Careless use of language can make things even worse.
