What is news?

The following are some famous quotes about news. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

When a dog bites a man, that is not news. But if a man bites a dog, that is news. —— John B. Bogart

Yes. The everyday is less interesting than the unusual.

1)News is what somebody somewhere wants to suppress; all the rest is advertising. —— Lord Northcliffe)

For a news story to have value it must upset someone; stories which are all praise are advertising. A rather harsh view is probably not true for ordinary local news, but it is more likely to be so in the case of controversial matters and scandals.

2)Nothing travels faster than light, with the possible exception of bad news. —— Douglas Adams

People really rush to pass on bad news, implying also we are less interested in good news. Gossip about a break-up between pop stars will be known more quickly than their winning an award.

3)News is what a chap who doesn’t care much about anything wants to read. And it’s only news until he’s read it. After that, it’s dead. —— Evelyn Waugh

The quote means news is for casual reading and once read can be forgotten. For many it is so.
