Marcel Pagnol (1895-1974) was a French novelist, playwright, and film-maker, whose work was set in Provence, France. He explored the relationships between people in small country villages, and the difficulties of their lives there.

Provence is a region in the southeast of France, famous for its countryside, its food and the cities of Aix, Marselle, Avignon, St Tropez, Cannes and Nice.

The Alpes is a range of mountains which pass through south-eastern France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy.

The Meditterranean is the sea that has Europe to the north, North Africa to the south, and Western Asia to the east.
