Study the reading skills and work on the task below .
1. Guessing unfamiliar words from context
It is not unusual to meet words you don't know in an academic article . Reading effectively means trying to guess the meaning of new words by looking at the context rather than stopping to look them up. Of course , you can look up important words the second time you read the article if you are still unsure of the meaning . Using the context to guess the meaning of a word is to look at the words that come before and after the word .

2. Recognizing cohesion (衔接)
In a well-written text , the author uses specific language to connect meaning , ideas and information in a way that makes the text clear and easy to understand . Such language is called cohesion .
There is a variety of cohesive language , including :
a) synonyms , rephrasing and repetition ;
b) noun phrases, e.g. "these terms" ;
c) pronouns , e.g. "this", "it"
d) linking language , e.g. "therefore", "indeed".
