Part One Introduction
In this unit, we are going to learn about what interpersonal skills are and how to develop interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skills are related to the way we communicate and interact with each other. Interpersonal skills play important roles not only in everyday relationship between friends or relatives, but also in workplace between company employees and clients and between co-workers. Interpersonal skills are one of the top criteria that employers used to evaluate candidates and effective interpersonal skills can ensure one’s success as a team player at work and promote a positive work environment. And most importantly, some interpersonal skills can be learned over time. Therefore, it is significant and necessary for us to learn how to develop effective interpersonal skills.
In this unit,
i. Students need to work as a team to find out some effective interpersonal skills and prepare a PPT presentation to share their findings in class.
ii. The themes of the listening part include The Significance of Effective Interpersonal Skills,
What Are Interpersonal Skills and Why They Are Important in the Workplace and Business Skills Required in the Digital Age. Students need to learn some new words related to interpersonal skills with correct pronunciation and listening skills such as predicting the content before listening, taking notes while listening and making summary through selecting important details, etc.
ii. In the reading part, Passage A mainly focuses on exploring What Are Interpersonal Skills. Students have to learn about 55 new words and expressions related to interpersonal skills and use them in specific context properly. Besides, students need to master some reading skills such as figuring out the main idea of each paragraph by identifying topic sentences, and summarizing the main ideas of the text by paraphrasing.
iii. Students need to learn how to study by themselves. Students need to study the SPOCs about reading skills and grammatical knowledge in Project 6 by themselves and apply what they learn in understanding Passages B and C.
iv. At the end of this unit, teachers can organize some activities to end the unit from three dimensions: language points, key language skills and intercultural reflection. Teachers should assign students to have some language quizzes in class to review the language points. Also, it is better to improve students’ practical language skills by doing the activities suggested in the Key Language Skills part. Last but not least, it is suggested to arrange activities listed in the Intercultural Reflection part in order to improve students’ critical thinking.
