• contracts manager - plans, manages, monitors and controls all the building operations
• estimator - estimates and calculates the probable costs of the labour, materials and equipment required for the work
• buyer - works with the builders merchants or manufacturers of materials, the plant hire people, the service industries (gas, water, electricity, etc.)
• planner - prepares the programme of work required for the smooth operation and execution of the building project
• site manager - or general foreman takes charge of all the work on site, to interpret and implement the planner's work
• site engineer - is responsible fpr ensuring that all the technical matters are properly set up, for example, the building is set in the correct position, al I the levels and angles given on the drawings and in the plans are correctly laid out, etc
• builder's quantity surveyor - or contracts surveyor takes care of all the measurements 011 site and control the materials, etc.
Building contractors are also responsible for employing the labour to erect the construction. This may be in the form of permanent employees or as contracted labour, more commonly known as'gangs'(self employed workmen working in gangs).
