Observe the following sentences that appear in this unit, paying special attention to the italicized words. Reflect on the use of adverbial clauses of concession.

1)    Though his office was next to mine, we rarely had extended conversations because he is shy.   (Para. 5,Text A)

2)    Although no one wants to think of herself as “typical”, my relationship to my computer is fairly typical for a woman.    (Para. 8, Text A)

3)    …though I never mastered having it do bibliographies or table of contents… (Para. 12, Text A)

4)    Much as I’d like to use it to do more, I begrudge the time it would take to learn. (Para. 12, Text A)

让步状语的用法：

1、让步状语从句表示“虽然”“尽管”“即使”等，通常可用though，although， if，even though(if)， when， whereas， granting that，granted that， admitting (that)，for all (that)，in spite of the fact等引导。

They are generous although they are poor.

虽然穷他们却很大方。

Though we are poor, we are still happy.

我们虽然穷，仍然很快活。

If he is little, he is strong.

他人虽小，但很壮。

He is an honest man, I must say, even though I have opposed him.

尽管我反对过他，我还得说他是一个诚实的人。

He refuses help when he has many friends.

他虽有许多朋友，但却拒绝其援助。

While I understand your point of view, I do not share it.

我虽了解你的观点，但不敢苟同。

Granted this is true, you are still in the wrong.

这话即使真实，你仍然是错的。

Admitting that he is naturally clever, we do not think he will make much improvement, as he pays no attention to his lessons.

他即使天资聪颖，我们也不认为他会有多大长进，因为他对功课不上心。

They are good people, for all that their ways are not the same as ours.

2、as 也可引导让步状语从句，但要将名词、形容词或副词等提到as前，若提前的是单数可数名词，要省略 a / an。如：

Teacher as he is, he can’t know everything.

虽然是老师，他也不可能什么都懂。

3、 连词 while 有时也可表示“尽管”、“虽然”，引导让步状语从句。如：

While we don’t agree, we continue to be friends.

尽管我们意见不同，我们还是朋友。

4、whatever, whoever, however, whenever, wherever 等引导让步状语从句。如：

Don’t lose heart whatever you do.

不管你做什么，都不要灰心。

Whoever you are, you can’t pass this way.

不管你是谁，你都不能从这里通过。

5、 表示“虽然”的 though,although 不可与 but 连用，但可与 yet, still 连用。
