The use of single , formal verbs (P188)

In academic writing , formal words characterized by being longer and complex , are more preferable to ordinary and familiar words which are frequently used in everyday speech , and single-verbs are also used  , verbs which are usually formal than their phrasal verb euqivalents.  (P 188)
